Wind power

As hydraulic power, wind power has been used by humankind for centuries. Wind has helped people by moving the blades of mills, or propelling the sails of ancient vessels.

Nowadays wind power represents one of the renewable energies that has seen more technical advance in its development.

The fathers of new wind power are with no doubt in Denmark, with its precursor Poul la Cour (1846-1908).

Wind is mainly a consequence of solar radiation that affects the Earth surface and provokes the warming of air masses surrounding it. By warming the surface of the earth in an unbalanced way and depending on latitude, pressure differences are caused and the air flow tries to balance them.

Power coming from the kinetic energy of the air is proportional to the cube of the wind speed, therefore, small variations on speed cause huge power variations.

The wind-power generators are the machines used to produce wind power.

There are two types of wind-power facilities:

  • Isolated: To produce power in remote sites, for self consumption. These facilities can be combined with photovoltaic solar panels. Generally they are small turbines to provide power to vessels, telephone facilities, etc.

  •  

    Wind farms are placed on the summit of mountains, where the speed of wind is adequate to obtain profitability from the investments. Nowadays it is being studied the settlement of wind farms offshore. In this case, the coast of A Coruña has a privileged geographical situation.

Current technological developments as well as a better knowledge of wind conditions in different areas allows the implementation of big wind farms connected to the electric network in almost all the autonomous communities in Spain.

In general terms, the wind power machine is divided into the following elements:

  • Tower: It can resist the pressure of wind and the turbulence from the ground. Its height can vary from 40 to 120 m tall.

  • Blades: The wind-power generator has a series of blades, generally three, whose mission is to transform kinetic power into electric power.

  • Orientation system: It keeps the rotor facing the direction of the wind depending on the device used.

  • Regulation system: It controls the rotation speed and the motor torque in the axis of the rotor to avoid fluctuations.

  • Transmission: Its mission is the fitting between the capturing system and the generation system.

  • Generator: It is the one in charge of producing electric energy. The power of the wind generator varies depending on the conditions of the facility. Power varies from 500 kw to 2,6 mw.
